
TEACHING READING IN THE CONTENT AREAS - BEED-MS-V 2-VT II-5 BEED MATHSCI TP-S-EEDRD02 (T/F 02:30PM-04:30PM/02:30PM-04:30PM)
The course focuses on reading to learn in different subject areas. Elementary level pre-service teachers are equipped with skills and strategies to enable learners to read complex, informational texts found in Social Studies, Science, Mathematics and other content areas. They acquire content area and disciplinary literacy and are expected to read diverse types of expository texts in varied formats effectively. They gain general and discipline-specific strategies that are needed to empower their future learners to become proficient and independent readers. They are also trained to apply particular strategies in designing reading lessons for implementation in a demonstration teaching. Pre-service teachers will develop and compile a portfolio of discipline-specific reading lessons that promote comprehension of complex informational texts in Science, Math, Social Studies, and other key content areas in the elementary curriculum. These lessons will reflect appropriate expository text structures and apply reading-to-learn strategies to support learner independence and subject understanding.

MANAGING THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT - BEED-MS-V 2-VT II-5 BEED MATHSCI TPROFED05 (T/F 12:30PM-02:30PM/12:30PM-02:30PM)
This course equips pre-service teachers with knowledge and strategies to design learning environments that optimize learning through classroom structures and activities that enhance learner engagement, self-regulation, and motivation. Students explore best practices in promoting purposive learning, supporting academic achievement, nurturing and respecting diversity in varied learning contexts. They study the teacher’s role in creating positive learning environments that foster lifelong learning; managing discipline problems, interpersonal conflicts; and cultivating a safe, secure fair, respectful, caring and inclusive learning climate. It emphasizes socio-emotional learning and inculcates empathy, human-centered problem-solving, compassion for others, honor, and effective leadership as critical values to integrate in a learning environment. They develop a comprehensive Learning Environment Management Plan (LEMP) to guide them in building a favorable environment to facilitate effective learning.
